UMass Boston invites applications from
interested graduate students in the physical sciences,
materials science, life science, mathematics, and engineering disciplines for
the NSF-sponsored GK-12 Teaching Fellows Program. |

About The Program |
The WISP program will
support four UMass Boston Science Graduate Students (Masters or Doctoral,
but Doctoral preferred) for one year. Fellows will use Watershed Sciences
(Environmental Sciences, Watershed Examples and Activities) to help
Middle School Science Teachers teach Science in the classrooms of
the Boston, Dedham and Milton Public Schools. Preference will be
given to graduate students with an expressed interest in using the
environment as an integrated context for learning, students with
a high likelihood of successful completion of a graduate science
degree at UMB and future career in science, and students already
engaged in graduate research. All graduate students in Biology,
Chemistry, Computer Sciences, Environmental, Earth and Ocean Sciences,
and Physics may apply. (Project Summary)
Prospective fellows should be committed to the
following:

Developing presentations and demonstrations
for use in K-12 classrooms.

Spending minimum of 15 hours per week (10 hours
in the classroom; 5 hours preparation outside the classroom)
during the entire school year providing direct assistance to
Teachers
- Required to take a specially developed course, "Teaching Environmental
Sciences and Technology" (TEST), that will provide continuing
pedagological and content training.
